ブータン遺産ウォンディ・フォダン（ワンデュ・ポダン）・ゾンが全焼 Wangduephodrang Dzong destroyed by fire

6月24日、ブータンを悲劇が襲いました。
1638年に建立され、ブータンで3番目に古いゾンであるウォンディ・フォダン・ゾン（地球の歩き方の表記ではワンデュ・ポダン・ゾン）が火災にあい、ほぼ全焼したのです。(1番古いのはシムトカ・ゾン、2番目はプナカ・ゾン)
ゾンとはかつての要塞で、日本でいう城郭です。現在は各県の県庁として行政を担うとともに、寺院の機能も共存する建物です。
A national tragedy hit Bhutan yesterday, June 24th.
Built in 1638, the dzong is the third oldest dzong in the country after the Semtokha and Punakha dzongs.
Dzong is a fortress, now used by regional administration and monk body.


374年の歴史を持つ遺産が、わずか5時間で灰となってしまいました。
最も神聖な仏具・遺物が納められた箱がかろうじて持ち出された以外は、大事な経典や国勢調査の書類など全てが失われてしまったそうです。
火災は、電気系統のショート・漏電による出火が原因と見られています。
The fire burnt away 374 years of history in five hours.
Except for the safe boxes containing the sacred relics (ngangtens) that were dropped from the roof into the nearby cacti undergrowth, nothing could be saved.
The fire is suspected to have started from a short circuit, but it is yet to be confirmed.

3月末にウォンディ・フォダン・ゾンを訪問して撮った写真が、皮肉にも最後の威光を収めるものとなってしまいました。
I visited the dzong late March this year. I didn't imagine then that the photos I took would become the last pictures capturing its historical authority.


伝統的な板葺き屋根のゾンはここしか残っていなかったそうです。
I heard that the dzongs with traditional wooden roof were only here.


ちょうど修復作業が行われていて、6月の時点で約４０％の修復が完了していましたが、その作業も失われたことになります。
The renovation was going on when I visited. As of June, 40% of renovation was completed.


第5代国王、そして父君の第4代国王も現場にかけつけたそうですが、そのときには火の勢いが強く、近づける状態ではありませんでした。
His Majesty the 5th King and the fourth Druk Gyalpo rushed to the scene following news of the fire, but it seemed the fire was already too strong for them to get closer to the dzong.


川沿いの丘に威風堂々とそびえていた美しいゾンを襲った悲劇。
政府はこの悲劇の翌日を国全体で喪に服す日として、政府機関をはじめ全てを閉める休日としました。死者が出なかったことが不幸中の幸いです。
The dzong was beautiful and glorious on the hill above the river.
The government declared the next day as "Day of Mourning," closing all the offices across the country.

このゾンの名前には由来があります。ブータンを統一したことで今も崇められるシャブドゥンが、この地の川に着いたときに、少年が砂の城を作っているのを目にしました。少年の名前を尋ねたところ、「ウォンディ」との答え。そこで、この地に建てるゾンを「ウォンディの宮殿」を意味する「ウォンディ・フォダン」と名付けたそうです。
The popular story has it that the Shabdrung arrived at the river and happened to see a boy building a sand castle. He asked for the boy's name, which was Wangdue, and thereupon decided to name the Dzong Wangdue Phodrang or 'Wangdue's Palace.'

ツイッター上でもブータン人が皆悲嘆にくれていたのですが、そんな中、20歳の女の子がつぶやいた言葉が心に残りました。
「ウォンディ・フォダン・ゾンほど威厳があり、壮大で、不朽のものが灰になってしまうのを目にして、私達は諸行無常こそが唯一の真実であることを思い知らされる」
若いブータン人にも仏教の根本的な教えが根付いていることを窺わせる言葉です。
One tweet from a young Bhutanese ( @ThujeePLhamo ) struck my mind:
"As something as Majestic, Mighty & Timeless as the Wangdue Phodrang Dzong turns to ash, we are reminded that impermanence is the only truth."

追記：火災から一夜明けたゾンの写真を、ゾンの近くで勤務する青年海外協力隊の友人が送ってくれました。上の写真と見比べると、本当に心が痛みます。

追記：カナダ人の友人が今日現場に向かったらしく、現地の写真をシェアしてくれたのですが、疲れ果てて途方に暮れる人々の姿が切なすぎます。

追記：特定非営利活動法人の国連友好協会がワンデュ・ポダン・ゾン火災へのお見舞金の受付を日本の口座で始めました。
ブータン王国名誉総領事の徳田ひとみさんが代表を務めています。活動報告を見るとブータン国連大使とも会談をされていますね。
Japan-UN Friendship Associations opened an account in Japan to accept donations to rebuild the dzong.

追記：ブータン人の若者が再建を目指して立ち上がり、フェイスブックページを立ち上げました。既に2万1千人(6/27時点)のブータン人が参加しています。英語のできる方でフェイスブックをされている方は、このグループに参加されてはいかがでしょうか。
In Facebook, "Citizens' Initiative to Rebuild Wangduephodrang Dzong" group has been launched by young Bhutanese. Already 21,000 Bhutanese have joined the group (as of June 27).
